Datastream Navigator
Datastream Navigator is accessible via the list of databases. To get access you need to log on with a password / username combination. This login information can be found here with your ERNA-account. You don't need a VPN-connection. Datastream Navigator is only accessible in Internet Explorer.
In Datastream Navigator you can search the codes you need to download data from Datastream (on a datateam pc). Datastream Navigator has three search options:
- Search: in this option you only have 1 search box. In the results screen you can refine the results by using the panel at the left side of the screen, for example by market or source.
- Explore: you can find this option in the black bar at the top of the Search screen. This is a 'guided search': you select first Equities, then a country, then a sector etc.
- Advanced Search: this option is available for all data categories in Datastream, you can search by name, market, status etc. These options vary by data category.
The information in Datastream Navigator is divided in different subsets, like Equities, Options, Economics and Commodities. Aways check on the left top if you are in the right data category. When looking for indices, please select Equity indices.
To be able to download data on indices from Datastream, you need two kinds of codes: codes related to the indices - in Datastream this is called Series - and codes related to the different kinds of data available for indices, like the Price Index, the market value, etc. Datastream calls these Datatypes.
TIP: Click in the Advanced Search on 'Reset all criteria' when starting to search. Possible earlier request will then be removed. |
In the Advanced Search you can search by entering the name of an indices (e.g. AEX), or the market (e.g. Netherlands), etc. When you start typing the Market, you'll get a list of possibilities, so you can be sure you've entered the market in the correct way. In the results screen you see the names of the indices matching your search. Behind the names you see a column with the DS Mnemonics: this is the code you need to download data of those indices from Datastream.

TIP: When looking for a certain indices of a country, but not recalling its precise name? Use the Explore-function, available in the black bar on top of the Search screen. Here you can browse like Equity Indices> By Market> Belgium > Euronext Brussels > Benchmarks and discovered its precice name should be Bel 20.

When you search in the Advanced Search, you can in the Results page directly view in the column 'Datatypes' what datatypes are available for the selected index and since when. PI (Price Index) is the most common datatype for indices.
After collecting the Mnemonics of the indices, put them into a column in Excel. Bring the Excel file along with you to download the data on the Datateam pc's in the University Library.
