Mergers and acquisitions

The UL offers several databases with mergers and acquisition data: ThomsonOne (= SDC data) and Zephyr. Because ThomsonOne has the most history and the largest number of deals, our examples will be with that database.

The M&A module in ThomsonOne (T1) contains information about over 400.000 worldwide deals since 1977. This database can be accessed from the list of financial databases on the EDSC website. You can access T1 at home via a VPN-connection.

Please note: ThomsonOne is only accessible in Internet Explorer!

In ThomsonOne you have to click Screening & Analysis (at the left side of the screen, almost at the bottom), click Deals & League Tables, choose M&A and open Advanced Search.

Searching the Advanced Search in the M&A module consists of several steps:

In the first step you give the criteria of the deals you look for: like the period when the deals have taken place, the country of the targets, the public status of the acquirors, the percentage of shares owned after the acquisition and so forth. This results finally in a number of deals.

In the second step you can get specific details from those selected deals: the names of the acquirors and targets, the announcement date, the SIC-codes, the deal value and so forth. You can export this report to Excel.

TIP: If at a later stage you want annual report data or stock prices from the companies found, you should include the SEDOL code to your report. This identifier will be recognized by the Excel add-in of Thomson One Banker and by Datastream.
