On Friday 9 February 2024, R.W. Jagroep will defend the doctoral thesis titled: ‘Older Surinamese migrants in the Netherlands: Neighbourhood age-friendliness, health behaviours and well-being‘.
Brief summary on the aim of the doctoral thesis:
Current Dutch neighbourhoods do not meet the needs of a culturally diverse older population. In multicultural cities, different societies have specific desires and preferences regarding aging in their own neighbourhoods. To comprehend age-friendly neighbourhoods and effectively promote healthy behavior and well-being, it is crucial to consider diverse cultural influences. Warsha Jagroep's dissertation highlights the importance of age-friendly neighbourhoods in encouraging healthy behaviour and optimizing well-being among Surinamese older migrants in the Netherlands.
The five studies in this dissertation emphasize the essence of culturally sensitive neighbourhood interventions and provide new insights into age-friendly neighbourhoods and their impact on healthy behaviour and well-being among Surinamese older adults in the Netherlands. The findings confirm the relevance of age-friendly neighbourhood features in promoting physical activity among Surinamese older adults. Furthermore, qualitative research in this dissertation demonstrates that neighbourhood features influence how Surinamese older adults perceive the age-friendliness of their neighbourhood. Not all Surinamese older adults require the same neighbourhood resources, and the impact of these resources on well-being varies within this population.
