Outdoor art
EUR and art
Erasmus University Rotterdam does not only concern itself with academic matters. The plastic arts are important to the university, with which it emphasizes its image. The approximately 50 statues on campus, Woudestein even created its own art route - allowing art lovers to admire both outdoor and indoor campus art.
EUR also possesses a sizeable graphics collection, which includes work by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Francis Bacon. These adorn the walls of the various Woudestein university buildings. A selection is on display in the Erasmus Gallery, as is EUR’s unique economic coin collection.
New campus art
New art will play a special role in the campus developments. The quality and significance of any new art on Woudestein will be matching the ambitions expressed in the Masterplan. In consultation with Art Affairs, EUR's Executive Board recently called into life the ‘percentage ruling Art’.
Campus art, present and new locations
Ad Haring’s Glass Relief, roundabout near porter’s lodge In 2013, this location will become the main entrance and entrance to the car park. The artwork will be stored and eventually find a new home in a park facing the E-building. This new destination was selected because of the work’s two-dimensional aspect.
Global Time - or the Clock - by Hans Citroen, entrance L-building This location will become the effervescent Plaza, come 2013. The sculpture has been stored and will be relocated at a later date, near the entrance to the L-building, on the edge of Plaza. |
|
The ‘Impossible Cuboid’ by Koos Verhoef, previously near square C- and H-buildings In three years’ time, the cuboid's previous location - on what is now Carillonlaan - will be the site of a water feature. The cuboid has by now been relocated to the lawn near the entrance of the A-building on Burgemeester Oudlaan. Here, the cuboid's shadow, an essential part of the artwork, can be clearly seen on the grass. |
|
Statue group ‘The Eggs’ by Hans Petri This location used to boast Woudestein's former campus icon, the statue group by Hans Petri. In 2013, this will become the entrance to Erasmus Plaza and car park. Petri's statue group could therefore not remain where it was. Relocating the art work turned out to be impossible, due to its deteriorated state. |
|
Early May 2011, Petri's statue group sadly had to demolished.
The Dice, or, seating elements by Ans van Haersolte, terrace facing H-building In 2013, the Student Pavilion – the new campus icon – will be situated here. The seating elements will go into storage until 2015. After that, a fitting new location will be selected. |
|
Ger van Iersel’s statue, near square at entrance A- and H-buildings Preferably, this artwork will remain in its present location. Although its surroundings will be undergoing changes, Art Affairs expects that the sculpture will be seen to its best advantage in the new surroundings, too. |
|
The Sun Dial, previously on lawn H-building The previous location is to be the site of the 2013 water feature. The artwork has by now been relocated to a grassy border near the entrance of the A-building, near Burg. Oudlaan.
Erasmus' statue, previously on Institutenlaan (near E-building) This sculpture has been temporarily relocated to the edge of the northerly pond near the library. In 2015, it will be given its final destination: a newly-constructed square in Park North. In other words, students will still be able to have their photo opportunity with Rotterdam’s Erasmus. |
