Design Student Pavilion
Architecture
The openness of this campus icon will be reinforced by its architecture: transparent facades, voids and open stairways. Its openness symbolizes the encounter. This unusual, multifunctional building will lend the Rotterdam university campus international standing.
Architect
For the design of this architectural eye catcher, The winning design (right) was made by the architectural team De Zwarte Hond / Powerhouse company. |

For the design, the architects are getting vital input from the user group Student Pavilion.
Student Pavilion: where you meet the world
The free-standing Student Pavilion with its high, floating roof will be located on the intersection of the two main road axes: Erasmus Plaza and Intitutenlaan. It will form a natural transition from the newly planned urban part of the campus to the more park-like part. The transparent pavilion fronts, which can partly be opened, stimulate social encounter.
|
The Student Pavilion will be situated on the water, where you can have a drink at the terrace café. Everybody will meet on this climatized ‘village square’. People, planet and profit are to go hand in hand: the pavilion will be a sustainable, energy-neutral building, with possibly an attractive green roof. |
Multifunctional pavilion
The Student Pavilion has been designed so that all different facilities and services can merge seamlessly.
In the heart of the building, there is a multifunctional hall with a slide-away grandstand, which offers seating to 200 spectators. With the grandstand slid away, there is space for double that amount. The flexible stage, slide-away grandstand and mobile bars result in a very multifunctional space. There will be something to everyone’s liking, ranging from debates, film and concerts, to dance parties, comedy or plays.
The ring running around the building’s core consists of 4 spaces, which gradually merge into each other: the foyer, grand café, coffee corner and work area, the latter with seats and digital information screens. There is Wifi in the entire building, which has excellent acoustics. You have a view of the surroundings wherever you find yourself in the ring, because of the glass façades. As there are several entrances, the pavilion forms a natural connection between the two campus halves with their different levels.
The spacious terraced café surrounding the pavilion will be a pleasure to visit, especially the part on the water. Here, you may come to watch outdoor performances or to enjoy the grand café’s excellent kitchen or good coffee. The Student Pavilion will add flavour to Woudestein campus!
