DESCRIPTION OF THE MAIL FACILITY
EMAIL FOR STUDENTS
EMAILSERVER
Email for 'EUR' addresses, (directed to email address '…@student.eur.nl') will be delivered on the mailserver of Microsoft in the cloud. The MX-records for this domain point to these servers in the cloud. Details on student email can be found on 24eur7.
EMAIL FOR EMPLOYEES
CENTRAL MAILRELAYS
Email sent to the 'EUR', (to email address '…@xxx.eur.nl', enters on one of the two central mail relays ('mrelay1.eur.nl' and 'mrelay2.eur.nl') of the EUR. The MX records for this domain point to these servers. The mailrelay decides to route mail to which mail server based on the subdomain (xxx). For various faculties, the mail is sent directly to the faculty mail server. The central mail relays act as a backup facility. The MX records point with the highest priority to the faculty mail server and with the lowest priority to the central mail relays.
CENTRAL MAIL SERVERS
Central mail server for EUR employees Staffservices, | exchange.eur.nl |
Both mail servers support the IMAP protocol.
Other faculties have an own faculty mail server for their employees.
ANTISPAM-ANTIVIRUS MEASURES, ATTACHMENT CONTROLL
A significant part of all received email is malicious because it contains spam or a virus. For spam information, see: http://www.spamvrij.nl. For virus information, see: http://www.virusalert.nl The email is scanned for spam characteristics and checked for the presence of viruses, and also for the file extension of a possible attachment.
ANTISPAM / BLACKLISTS
The EUR uses blacklists to refuse mail from mail servers that have proven to spread spam.
Several blacklists are used on the central mail relays. Email originating from a mail server posted on one of the blacklists in use is refused. This refused server will send an email notifying that the email is being refused with a reference to the relevant blacklist.

ANTIVIRUS
The McAfee scan engine is used to control viruses on the central mail relays and on the central mail servers. The availability of a new DAT file is checked every hour, and if present it is activated. If a virus is encountered, the email is dumped without sending a report to the sender or the receiver of the email. A report is omitted to prevent mass refusal emails from being generated in case of a mass virus attack, while these refusals mostly do not arrive since the sender address is often a random one. The mail relay or mail server would in that case possibly suffer from considerable delay.
ATTACHMENT CONTROL
The file extension of any attachment is checked on the central mail relays and on the central mail servers. This is done in order to prevent a virus attack to as great an extent possible if the characteristics of the relevant virus have not been included in the latest available DAT file. Many viruses can now enter simply hidden in an attachment. Double extensions are refused:.xxx.(vbs | pif | scr | bat | com |exe | dll) or one of the following extensions: (ade | adp | bas | bat | chm | cmd | com | cpl | crt | exe | hlp | hta | inf | ins | isp | js| jse | lnk | mdb | mde | msc | msi | msp | mst | pcd | pif | reg | scr | sct | shs | shb | vb | vbe | vbs | wsc | wsf | wsh). If an attachment with such a file extension is encountered, the email is dumped with a report to the sender. The receiver does not receive a message.
MAILBOX QUOTA
Standard size of an employee mailbox on the central mail server: | 500 MB |
Once the mailbox reaches 85% of the quota allowed, the PC mail client will be able to indicate this. The mail server runs a daily routine that determines whether the limit of 85% of a mailbox is exceeded. In that case, the user will receive an email with the request to clean up the mailbox. As soon as 100% of the quota is reached, no more mail is delivered. The mail server will still attempt to deliver the email for 5 more days.
EMAIL SIZE PERMITTED
The central email relays and the central mail servers of the EUR accept email up to a size of 20 MB.
MAILBOX MAINTENANCE
Employees and external staff are able to set a forward or autoreply on their mailbox via exchange.eur.nl (employees) or via 24EUR (students). Students have the option of changing their email address (insofar as the part for the domain is concerned). The link below give more detailed explanations:
