FSW VPN Connection Tool

This VPN-Tool is for FSW Employees only.
If you are not an FSW Employee, we kindly refer you to the FSW VPN-Tool for students, which automatically sets up a VPN-Connection but does not attempt to connect to the FSW Network.

Please read the information under "Before installation" before installing the FSW VPN-Tool

Versions of the VPN-tool:

Choose the VPN-tool that is correct for your situation:

32-bits operating system with Windows XP:

VPNXP_32.exe

32-bits operating system with Windows Vista/Windows 7/Windows 8

VPNW7_32.exe

64-bits operating system with Windows Vista/Windows 7/Windows 8

VPNW7_64.exe

*If you don't know whether you have a 32-bits or a 64-bits operating system, you will most likely have a 32-bits version. If you try to install the wrong version you will receive an error about the processor architecture. In that case, try the other one.

For the use of services described above, the regulations called "gebruik van computer en netwerkfaciliteiten van de EUR" are advised. In the light of these regulations, you should make sure that your computer is equipped with anti-virus software. For other use conditions, we refer to the manuals.

Complications:

  • You do not have Windows 2000 and/or Windows XP
In relation to the VPN connection, the Erasmus University supports no other operation systems than Windows 2000 and/or Windows XP. However, at www.erna.nl there is a guideline how to establish a VPN connection on a Mac PC.
  • You are using Zone Alarm, Norton Firewall or another firewall
Make sure that the PPTP VPN connections should be allowed. Moreover, you should give access from and to the following IP Address
    FSW employees: 130.115.62.7
    FSW students: 130.115.62.9

Problems and solutions:

While installing the VPN-connection

  • Error: This is not a Win32-application
You're attempting to install a 64-bit version of the FSW VPN-Tool on a 32-bit Windows system. Download the 32-bit version (found at the top of this webpage) and install.
  • Error: This profile was not built for this processor architecture
You're attempting to install a 32-bit version of the FSW VPN-Tool on a 64-bit Windows system. Download the 64-bit version (found at the top of this webpage under the regular VPN-Tool) and install.

While establishing the VPN-connection

  • First logon screen
At the word "User name:" please fill in your ERNA-number followed by "@eur.nl".
At the word "Password:" fill in your password, the same you are using for your Erna-email.

  • Choose "Work" network when asked

  • Second logon screen (Only FSW VPN Connection Tool)
At the "FSW Logon name": fill in your logon name. This is the same logon name that you use when you log on at a PC at the Erasmus University. Mostly this is your surname.
At "FSW Password": fill in your password, the same you use to log on at a PC at the Erasmus University.
For "Show Finish window after completion" You can indicate whether you would like to see a “Finish" report after a successful mapping (creation in the Y: en Z: drive). This service is standard.
Your logon name will be remembered automatically, yet your password will not.

  • You are getting an error report in relation to CMMON32
This has almost always to do with an incorrect installation of the Zonelabs firewall. If you have ever installed this firewall, it is possible that this has made your Windows system unstable. In this case, you have to re-install the latest version of this firewall again. Remove the VPN connection , restart the system and install the tool again. If the problem remains, please control the integrity of the Hard Disk.
  • Error: "..Can't initialise.."
Check if you correctly installed the Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0.
  • You receive error 619
If this error report appears, it means that something went wrong with the connection. Please restart Windows and start all over again.
    If the error report is constant;
Check whether your software-firewall is blocking IP PROTOCOL 47 (GRE) (Open VPN PPTP/GRE in your firewall).
Check whether your ADSL/cable router is blocking IP PROTOCOL 47 (GRE) (Open VPN PPTP/GRE in your router, (see the instructions of your router).
Check wheter your Internet provider is blocking IP PROTOCOL 47 (GRE) (please contact your provider).
  • You receive error 742
Disconnect the VPN connection and try again, if necessary restart the computer. Reinstallation of the VPN-connection will not help. Check the settings of your Internet Explorer whether the security is set on typical.
  • You constantly receive error 769
Error report 769 means that the network card is not connected. In this case, go to “Network Connections” and enable the network card. In some cases it is necessary to restart your computer.
  • You receive error 800
If you have a wireless ADSL router/modem, than it probably is necessary to update the Firmware. In order to do so, please contact the manufacturer or check their website. In some cases it is also possible that your internet connection is not stable enough, in this case please contact your internet provider.
  • You constantly receive error 721 / 781 / 800 / 806
These error reports in combination with the VPN connection mean that the computer is not capable of making a connection with the Server.
These error reports are generated because of the fact that there is no internet connection or because of the fact that a firewall is blocking the connection. Mostly this is rather easy to make Firewall accept the VPN connection. In some routers it is indicated as IP PROTOCOL 47 (GRE) PPTP Protocol. If it is not possible to indicate within your router that you would like to accept the VPN connection, then you should adjust firmware of the router. To do so, contact the manufacturer or check their website.
If you have to adjust the gates of the Firewall manually, please note that it is important to open the gates stated below:
Gate at the side of the client: 1024-65535/TCP
Gate at the side of the Server: 1723/TCP
FSW employees: Indicate also in your firewall that you are also giving access from and to the following IP Address: 130.115.62.7
FSS students: Indicate also in your firewall that you are also giving access from and to the following IP Address: 130.115.62.9
  • You receive the error; “Error Deleting Drive Y/Z: Check to make sure it is not in use. Drive Y/Z: is not mapped to the Home/Departments Drive.”
This means that drive Y: of Z: already in use is, disconnect this and remove from the "My Computer” the Y: en Z: Drive.
  • You receive the error “Error Mapping Drive Z: to Departments Drive.”
If you only get this report in relation to the Z: Drive, then it is possible that you do not have access to the departments Drive.
  • You receive the error; “Error Mapping Drive Y: to Home Drive.”
You have probably given the wrong password for the FSW logon process. In this case click with the right mouse button at the 2 small orange screens in the right corner of the taskbar and choose “Remap FSW Network Drives”. Please mind that you use your FSW logon name and password just as you use when you are logging in at a computer at the EUR.
  • Error: Not responding"
Usually windows is too quick sending this error-message. We advise you to wait at least for 30 seconds more.

After establishing the VPN-connection

  • After establishing the connection you do not see a H: Drive
This is correct, the H: Drive is shown as the Y: Drive. This is because of the fact that mostly the H: Drive is already in use. De department Drive is connected as a Z: Drive.
  • It is not possible to reach the Drives/ documents that you can find when you are at your working place at the EUR.
We only make a connection with the personal Drive, which is the H: Drive at the EUR. In the "options" screen you can add other network resources you want to access.
  • The opening of documents is very slow
Since the connection is being realized via your existing internet connection, the speed of the opening and saving of documents is correlated with that connection. If you have ADSL, uploading (to put something back on the Server) will require much more time than downloading (to open a file from the server).
If you want to change a file, it is best to copy the file to the local system first (for example the desktop) and edit it. After saving the changes, you can place the file back on the Server.
  • Some websites or programs do not work anymore when the connection is open
This is possible because the VPN connection simulates that your home-PC is located at the Erasmus University. As long as the connection is open, other programmes and internet sites will “think” this too.
    In a lot of cases the stated below will not work. For example in the case of;
    - the sending of private e-mail (via the ERNA webmail it is possible)
    - P2P programmes
    - Secured websites outside the EUR domain
  • Windows start slowly after the connection is made
When this situation occurs, it means that the last time that you have used the VPN connection, it has not been disconnected properly. Another possibility could be that, while closing the VPN connection, certain files at the Y: or Z-drive were still open at the computer.
It is very important to first close the files at the Y: and Z:,Drive, then to close the connection and after this procedure, to close the computer. By doing this, the computer will start up much faster the next time that you use the computer.
  • After restarting of your computer, the Y: and/or Z: dissappeared
Every time when you would like to use your data from the FSW network, it is necessary to make the VPN connection all over again. In order to do so, you should click the "FSW Remote Connection" Icon at the desktop or in the Network settings-screen.
  • After restarting of your computer, the Y: and/or Z: Drive appear yet they give an error report when one tries to open the files
By doing this, Windows will start up much faster the next time that you use the computer.

Disconnecting

  • How to disconnect the VPN connection
Use the right button of your mouse and to click the small orange icon in the right corner of the taskbar and choose ”Disconnect”.
  • How to deinstall a connection
Remove the VPN connection from “Network Connections". In this way, all the added software will be removed automatically.
