E-mail and storage problems resolved.

In recent weeks there have been problems with the E-mail and calendar. These expressed themself mainly in a slow or unresponsive Outlook or webmail.
The problem turns out to have had two causes. As previously reported, the equipment for the storage of e-mails and calendar data had issues with the simultaneous delivery of large amounts of data.
In addition it was found that the Windows 7 operating system has an unexpected feature. When your computer request E-mail or calendar data from the central mail servers, Windows 7 will, in many cases, use a method (HTTPS instead of MAPI) that uses a lot of memory on these servers. This unexpected extreme memory usage on the central mail servers caused all users of e-mail and calendar to experience problems, including those with operating systems other than Windows 7.
The SSC ICT has now taken steps to resolve both problems. The storage of the data has been spread across multiple devices. In addition, the memory of the mail servers has been greatly expanded. Finally, the configuration settings of all the Windows 7 PCs on the campus will soon be changed to prevent any future problems. Since these measures were taken there have been no additional problems with the E-mail or Calendar.
