1- Is Kurzweil compatible with other monitoring systems like Apple/Mac or Linux?
The Kurzweil-3000 software packet only works with a Windows monitoring system, that is Windows 2000, XP and Vista. It’s a pity that they don’t offer the ability to use Kurzweil direct on system based on Apple.
There is a solution for this problem by installing Microsoft on an Apple desktop on which you can install Kurzweil. One of the programs you can install is for instance: VM WARe, Virtual Desktop, Bootcamp or Parallel Desktop to get it done.
2- Do you have to come to the Erasmus University for the use of Kurzweil?
No, there is a possibility for the students to download Kurzweil at the EUR-site at ERNA folder. So, you can use it at home.
3- Installation problems
Realspeak Clair en Solo are other voices who can pronounce sentences in another form of intonation. When you want to install Realspeak (because Vandale Woordenboek is a Dutch dictionary) and install Kurzweil at the same time, there will come a problem around.
Please install K3000 or K1000 before you install Realspeak. If you already got the problem, try to deinstall all Kurzweil files including Realspeak, and then in separate steps.
The manual that can be downloaded is only in Dutch. Here is a resume of the steps you have tot take to complete the installation:
Kurzweil 3000 network LearnStation – OK
“capps1.eur.nl” with the IP address 188.8.131.52 – YES
FireFox support plug-in
Draig the file Firefox\KESIReader Extensie\KESIReader.xpi to the Firefox window,
Or choose in Firefox [FILE]-[Open FILE] and open KESIReader.xpi
After the installation and firefox is rebooted, the computer can recognize the Kurzweil extension.
4- Startup problems
When you want to start up the program, it may give you the following error:
"Maak connectie met de Kurzweil-server, neem voor meer informatie contactop met je serverprovider”.
"De Kurzweil 3000 netwerkserver in momenteel niet beschikbaar. Gelieve uw netwerkbeheerder te contacten voor hulp".
The kurzweil-3000 network server is not available at the moment. Please contact your network provider for help
The solution is that you have to connect EUR-server, e.g. to the VitualPrivateNetwork-connection (VPN), before you can start and use the program.
5- Is the program only for people with dyslexia?
No, the program is for everyone who benefits of using it, in other words students who have a ERNA-username and password. Everyone can use it at the Erasmus University (Building T: BIG – Buidling C: UniversityLibarary – Building G) as well as at home, by downloading it for your own laptop or desktop.
The program is not only for dyslectic people but also for people with ADHD, RSI, visual problems and the “normal students” (if there are any!).
On top of that the program is developed to lighten the study time by for instance making audio document (mp3) for a mp3-player in a way in which you can listen your PDF-file in the bus or subway.
Besides, you can cluster the words that are important and bring them in a separate file as a summary, right away. It will make a difference in time. Furthermore, it will increase the recognition of words and therefore stimulate the meaning and power of learning.
Moreover, learning a new language is becoming a lot easier because Kurzweil reads the words on paper and presents it as oral information, so you can hear the words as well as see the words.
6- Which files can be imported by Kurzweil for reading out loud?
At EUR-ERNA site with the VNP-connection, the learnstation version
KES (kesi file/kurzweil file) – RTF (Rich Text Format) -TXT- DOX (word 2003) - DOCX (word 2007) - OPF (daisyRom) - HTM/HTML (reading the web – www)
At the Erasmus University, the pro version
All the above that is mentioned including PDF-files
7- Do I have to go the EUR for using a PDF-file?
No, you could solve the problem by the following three options.
1) PDF-ripper (demo)
2)Send it right away to your mailbox
A disadvantage is that it will take a while before you will get the file.
3) In adobe-reader from PDF to text-file (.txt)
File - Save as text
8- Can Kurzweil only be installed in Dutch?
No, the application is both in Dutch and English. It means that the medium of communication of the software is therefore also accessible for the native students.
9- Can Kurzweil only read out loud Dutch imported files?
No, it is possible to read out loud in more than one language like
