'Afstudeersteun'

What does 'afstudeersteun' entail?

A basic or, as the case may be, supplemental grant is only awarded during a limited number of years. If during this period the student is faced with study delay as a result of extraordinary circumstances, then he/she can appeal to the university for financial support ('afstudeersteun').

Extraordinary circumstances include:

  • illness
  • pregnancy
  • physical, sensory or other functional disorders (handicap)
  • extraordinary family situation
  • membership to university bodies (university council, faculty board and teaching committee) position on the board of appointed student organisations
  • insufficient practicability of the study programme

The following cases are excluded from the right of financial support:

  • for a position on the board of the university or a student organisation for which the student has personally received a student representative grant from the university
  • for board membership to an organisation that was awarded a subsidy by the university for student representative grants
  • for a position on the board of a student organisation during an administrative year for which the student has not personally received a student representative grant, but fellow board members did (before 1 September 1997)
