Insurance

Please do ensure that you are properly insured during your time at university! Third-party liability insurance is absolutely essential.
You should also make sure you are insured for medical expenses. And if you live in digs, a fire and house contents insurance is a sensible idea too.

Medical expenses
All citizens of the Netherlands are obliged by law to take out a basic insurance for medical expenses. You are insured on your parents’ medical insurance free of charge until your 18th birthday. After your 18th birthday, you have to take out the basic medical insurance yourself.

Foreign students
Foreign students aged up to 30 years who are only in the Netherlands for their studies are not obliged to take out the basic medical insurance. However, if this applies to you, do make sure you’re otherwise well insured for medical expenses!

Foreign students aged 30 years and over who will be staying for less than one year in the Netherlands and don’t have a weekend or evening job don’t have to take out the basic medical insurance. But if you’re staying here for longer, or if you take a weekend/evening job, you will be obliged to take out insurance.

Weekend/evening jobs
If you have a job in the evenings or at the weekend, even if it’s just one hour a week, you have to take out the basic medical insurance.
