The candidate is usually a member of the academic staff of the university. A candidate is normally appointed for four years with a full time appointment and the aim of obtaining the degree of doctor. The main tasks of the candidate are to carry out research, to attend lectures and to give lectures. See also the Manual of the P&O directorate. It is also possible – after consulting the professor – to take a doctorate at the University without having a staff appointment.
