Statutory tuition fee

The statutory tuition fee is the tuition fee set annually by Dutch law. For 2012-2013 this will be
€ 1,771. The statutory tuition fee is generally lower than the institute tuition fee.

Institute tuition fee

The institute tuition fee is the higher tuition fee set annually by each educational institute. The institute tuition fee may vary according to the programme of study and applies to students who are not eligible for the statutory tuition fee.

You are not eligible for the statutory tuition fees if you do not meet one the following requirements:

  • residence requirement
  • non-EU/EER nationality, except for Swiss of Surinamese nationals
  • students who have, since August 1991, already been awarded a degree in Dutch Higher Education that is the equivalent of their current programme of study (bachelor and/or master)

EUR Transitional regulation

Transitional regulation for students registered in 2010-2011 for a second programme of study at Erasmus University
If you meet the conditions for the transitional regulation, you may complete your second
programme of study at Erasmus University for institute tuition fee III, which is equal to the statutory tuition fee. The transitional regulation applies to academic year 2013-2014.

Conditions:

  • you have, since August 1991, already been awarded a degree in Dutch Higher Education that is the equivalent of your current programme of study
  • you are registered in 2010-2011 as a student for your second programme of study at Erasmus University Rotterdam
  • you will complete your second programme of study before September 2014
  • you meet the residence requirement
  • you have EUR/EER, Swiss or Surinamese nationality

Residence requirement for students with the EUR/EER, Swiss or Surinamese nationality

One of the conditions for eligibility for the statutory tuition fee is that on 30 September you must be registered in the Municipal Personal Records Database (GBA) as a resident in one of the following countries or states:

  • the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg
  • one of the federal states North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony or Bremen of the  Federal Republic of Germany

DUO (formerly the IB-groep) conducts annual checks of the GBA to ensure that you meet the residence requirement. If you do not, you will pay institute tuition fee II for the academic year in question.

The residence requirement on the reference date (30 September) applies to new students and those who have re-registered. Students who travel abroad for an exchange or traineeship should contact the ESSC.
