Costs

Study fee

The MEMR is a one year full-time course. The EU/EEA fee applies to candidates who have normally been resident (i.e. not studying full-time) in the EU/EEA for at least three years preceding the course and who have no restrictions on their passport. All other candidates pay the non-EU/EEA fee.

Study fee 2010/2011 EU/EEA
€ 5,500

Study fee 2010/2011 Non-EU/EEA
€ 11,400

The Study fee includes study material and the travel- and accommodation costs for the international excursion, but does not include travel costs for the local excursions, nor any other travel costs or living expenses.

Scholarships

Unfortunately our university cannot provide any scholarships. We advise you therefore to get information from your employer / government or home university, in order to find out about local funding possibilities in your country. You can, however, apply for a scholarship of the Netherlands fellowship programme (NUFFIC). For more information on these scholarships, you are advised to visit the NUFFIC website. On this website you can see which kind of scholarships might be available for you.

It is important  to plan some time ahead to have a chance to get a NUFFIC scholarship - in order to be considered for a scholarship in the study year 2010/2011, you must deliver your scholarship application online at NUFFIC, before February 1, 2010. Your application for a Huygens scholarship will only be considered if you have obtained a Huygens nomination letter from us.

Cost of Living

The cost of living in the Netherlands is modest, compared with other countries offering higher education programs in English (like the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, etc.). To have a reasonable living standard in the Netherlands, you should have an income of approximately € 740 per month or € 8,880 per year (excluding the tuition fee).

Here is an example of possible expenditures per month:

Furnished accommodation, including gas and electricity

€ 425.00

Medical insurance (compulsory only for non EU citizens)

€ 36.00

€ 22.00

Cost of housing

A furnished room in a shared apartment in Rotterdam usually costs between € 350 and € 525 per month (including utility costs); if you want to have an individual unit with your own bathroom and kitchen you have to count with € 525 to € 650 per month (also including utility costs). These are the prices for accommodation offered through the university.

Stadswonen is the direct provider of student accomodations for the Erasmus University Rotterdam and can provide housing for your stay in Rotterdam. A list of the available accommodations can be found on their website. If you wish to arrange an accomodation through Stadswonen, you need to register online to be able to make your own reservation through the Shortstay Reservation System. Your reservation will directly be approved by the MEMR coordinator once you are accepted as a MEMR student by the Academic Committee.

There are also possibilities to find accommodation on the private market which are cheaper, but most of the providers and websites are unfortunately in Dutch. Note that most private companies ask an agent fee of about 1 month rent. These are some of the housing-websites available in English where you could have a try:
