18th Mandeville Lecture. The Mandeville Lecture, which takes its name from the Rotterdam-born philosopher and physician Bernard Mandeville (1670-1733), is an initiative of Erasmus University Rotterdam,  Rotterdam Business Club and the Erasmus University Trust Fund. Together they form the Bernard Mandeville Foundation which annually pays tribute to individuals who have performed distinguished services for society.

Jean-Claude Trichet delivers 2012 Mandeville Lecture

Jean-Claude Trichet, the former president of the European Central Bank (ECB), will deliver the 18th Mandeville Lecture on Wednesday 6 June 2012. The Mandeville Lecture is given by people who have distinguished themselves by their services to society and is the equivalent of an honorary doctorate. Erasmus University Rotterdam awards honorary doctorates on the strength of great academic merit.

Jean-Claude Trichet (1942) was president of the European Central Bank (ECB) from 2003 to 2011. He said farewell in November last year.
Trichet was born in Lyon. He was educated at the École nationale supérieure des Mines in Nancy and later at the École nationale d'administration. In 1993 he became president of the French central bank, Banque de France. Ten years later he succeeded Wim Duisenberg who was the first president of the ECB’s governing council.

Earlier laureates include Joop van den Ende, Jeroen van der Veer, Bernard Bot, Lilian Goncalves, Ruud Lubbers and Frits Bolkestein.
