Tinbergen Institute Master of Philosophy in Economics (Research Master)

The Tinbergen Institute (TI) is the graduateschool and research institute of the economics departments of Erasmus University Rotterdam, the University of Amsterdam, and the Vrije University of Amsterdam. The TI Graduate School offers five-year graduate programme consisting of two years of intensive graduate coursework in the institute’s MPhil in Economics and three years of PhD thesis research. Roughly half of the students at TI come from abroad.


The MPhil programme is a two-year research master in economics, econometrics and finance. It is an excellent preparation for PhD thesis research in these fields. The programme’s high standards are guaranteed by selecting the teaching staff from among the best researchers of the three economics departments participating in the institute, and by inviting internationally renowned experts to serve as guest lecturers in their fields of research. The programme’s high quality is also maintained by carefully selecting only the best students from alarge international pool of applicants.

Career prospects

The MPhil programme is part of a five-year PhD track in Economics, but can also serve as an excellent stepping-stone for a career outside the university. TI’s alumni have taken up influential positions at universities all over the world, not to mention in government ministries, the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis, the Dutch Central Bank, the World Bank, the European Commission, the IMF and the management of larger enterprises and consultancy firms.

Admission Requirements

Applicants for the Master’s programme should hold a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Economics, Econometrics, Mathematics or Physics. Only a limited number of students are admitted after a thorough selection procedure, in which quality and aspirations will be assessed by means of a recent GRE examination and a written letter of intent. Students should also be fluent in English, demonstrated by holding a degree from a Dutch university or an institution at which English is the language of instruction or by scoring at least 600 on the paper-based TOEFL, 250 on the computer-based TOEFL, 100 on the internet based TOEFL, or 7 on the IELTS. Any scores that are more than two years old are not valid and will not be considered. Two letters of recommendation (in sealed and signed envelopes) should be submitted as well. Chinese nationals should meet the institute’s IELTS requirement, because this is a condition for obtaining the required NESO Certificate.
