Mosaic

In 2009, NWO – the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research – will organise its sixth Mozaïek (‘Mosaic’) programme to help graduates from ethnic minority groups move on in the world of science. A Mozaïek subsidy fully finances doctoral research at a Dutch university.

Target group

The target group consists of graduates and final year students (who will be graduating in 2009 at the latest) at Dutch universities who have received their entire university education in the Netherlands or else – if they only took their university Master’s degree (and not the Bachelor’s) here – have been resident in the Netherlands for at least 5 years. In addition, both of the applicant’s parents – or the applicant and at least one parent – must have been born in one of the target group countries (see programme brochure for details).

Application

In 2009, about 20 doctoral research posts will be financed. We would be grateful if you could distribute the enclosed programme brochure within your faculty, and also encourage those of your students who belong to the target group for the Mozaïek programme to submit an application.

Each application, which must be in the English language, must be accompanied by:

  • the applicant’s curriculum vitae
  • a brief, clear description of a single research idea (maximum 500 words)
  • a letter of recommendation jointly signed by a professor (the intended promotor) and a mentor.

The professor and mentor will use the jointly signed letter of recommendation to present and propose the applicant to NWO. Please note that NWO has indicated that the lack of research experience on the part of such applicants means that its selection process will pay particular attention to the information contained in the above letter of recommendation.

The applications must be submitted online to www.iris.nwo.nl by 8 January 2009 (by 11.59 p.m.) at the latest. You can download the application forms and the 2009 Mozaïek programme brochure.
