University Ceremonies
The most common university ceremonies are as follows:
- PhD Ceremonies
- Inaugural addresses
- Farewell speeches
These events are an ideal way for the ESE to raise its profile and for us to demonstrate our expertise and excellence. In addition, they allow people to meet, to get to know each other better and to show appreciation for work that has been done.
PhD Ceremonies
PhD theses are generally printed by TI or ERIM. As a rule, the ESE does not make a contribution to receptions for PhD ceremonies. However, if the ceremony will clearly provide extra publicity for the ESE as a whole, resulting in, for example, the attendance of extra and special guests, then a request for an extra contribution can be submitted to the dean.
Inaugural addresses and Farewell Speeches
Inaugural addresses and farewell speeches should preferably be released in the ESE Series. For instance, http://people.few.eur.nl/vanderlecq/, inaugural address 17/4/2009, and http://people.few.eur.nl/dijkgraaf/, inaugural address 13/10/2009. In such cases, the ESE will bear the printing costs up to a maximum of 2,000 euros. In the event that the attendance of dignitaries at Inaugural addresses or farewell speeches necessitates that the reception be made somewhat more prestigious, then a financial contribution for these purposes can be requested from the dean. If security personnel must be hired, then this must be arranged in consultation with the School.
Publicity
All ESE PhD ceremonies, inaugural addresses and farewell speeches are publicised in the ESE newsletter and on the ESE website. All professors are notified about Inaugural addresses and farewell speeches a month in advance by means of an e‑mail sent on behalf of the dean. It is of great importance that all of these persons attend these events.
Further Information
The Dean’s office of the ESE Administration office, specifically marketing manager Jef Verschuren, are responsible for implementing these arrangements (verschuren@ese.eur.nl). Please contact the aforementioned regarding the publication of the introductory/closing speeches, specific details with regard to the catering at the receptions, and security measures.
