Course in theatrical techniques

Most teachers that lecture suffer from 5 pitfalls that hinder communication with their audience. Aspects that might come to mind are speaking too fast, poor articulation and intonation that unconsciously tells you that the lecture is boring. During the theatrical techniques course we eliminate 95% of these pitfalls. The effect on the fear of speaking is somewhat less, but at 80%, it is still not bad. That means that at the end of the course nearly everyone can utilise theatrics in the realm of teaching. More important is that teachers enjoy teaching much better and are often perceived as being more genuine. The most important score point is a drop in the decreasing attention span of the audience, which is something that has been characteristic of lectures throughout the ages. This will be a thing of the past, provided that teachers apply in practice what they have learned in the course.

Teachers who want to bring their contents even more into the limelight can also take my course ‘Using Stories in Science and Education’. In this course we examine stories that are absolutely world class in order to shape our presentations. There is also a combined course called ‘The Art of Presenting Science’, which combines theatrical techniques and story-telling in a course of 3 half-days. This course is usually attended by doctoral students. The latest and newest offshoot in our course selection is ‘Activating Large Groups’ in which teachers learn how they can stimulate their audience to work and how they can make their audience more active at certain listening moments.
