Practical information sheet

On this page you can read a lot about the exchange programme offered here at the Erasmus School of Economics. For a PDF file containing all the dates, regulations and other practical information, you can follow this link.

Exchange period

Nominations for inbound exchange students are possible for the following three exchange periods:

  • 3 September 2012 through 27 April 2013 (Block 1 - 4)
  • 3 September 2012 through 22 December 2012 (Block 1 & 2)
  • 7 January 2013 through 27 April 2013 (Block 3 & 4)

Note: there are only 2 courses (12 ECTS) available for exchange students in Block 5 (see the available courses mentioned in Block 1 - 4 and Block 3&4). Should an exchange student want to attend these courses, a special request by the partner's international office needs to be made to our exchange coordinator. There are no other options than the above possibilities for an exchange period.

The specific details will be explained by choosing one of these three offered periods:

Block System

Exchange students study for 2 or 4 blocks in total. Each block consists of 8 weeks: 7 weeks of classes, followed by the exam in the 8th week.
Blocks 1 & 2 run from September through December; blocks 3 & 4 run from January through April.
Exchange students are not allowed to follow classes in Block 5.

Available courses

Exchange students are offered a Minor (only provided in Block 1) and can choose courses offered in the Bachelor-3 phase of our International Bachelor’s degree programme in Economics and Business Economics (also known as IBEB). All the Minors and classes are taught in English.
It is not allowed to attend Bachelor-1,-2 or Master courses (except for students who come from partner universities with whom we have Master contracts, please check this with your coordinator).

Because of the block system, the education approach is intensive, but if you keep up with your classes and study materials, you will have the best possible chance of completing your courses and exams with success. Students are advised to take on a study workload of approximately 12 ECTS per block. Students who need to obtain 30 ECTS per 2 blocks (or 60 in 4 Blocks) do need to choose more classes and their workload is more than other students.

If necessary, it's possible to take part in the resits held in the month of July (if applicable, students will have to come back for these resits).

Here you can see a course overview for the academic year 2012 - 2013 for exchange students.

Minors and Seminars

Only in block 1, Minors are offered: these are carefully comprised packages of multiple courses on a specific field in economics. On the website of the Minors, they are explained.

Block 4 offers you a selection of Bachelor’s seminars, where you will have the chance to handle cases in small work groups and work with your lecturer in an interactive environment.
Besides the two above-mentioned specific offerings, there are courses in any given field of economics to choose from.
All throughout blocks 1 through 4, regular/core courses are offered.

Registering for courses

Before arrival you must be registered for the courses for your first block (this can be either Block 1 or Block 3, depending on whether you start in the fall or the spring semester).

Exchange students can choose between a Minor (only in block 1) or classes. Their choice must be provided to us upfront (by e-mail). Registration for the second blocks will only be possible during the previous blocks and must be done by the student him/herself. Students should pay close attention to requirements for registration for courses. Some courses require successful participation in courses from previous blocks.

Visa information

When you are accepted as an exchange student you might need to apply for an provisional residence permit via the so called Accelerated Visa procedure. The Erasmus University has an agreement with the IND (Immigration Services). We can therefore make use of this Accelerated Visa Procedure by applying for the visa for you. This way the decision of the IND could be available within 3 till 6 weeks.

To be able to apply for this procedure you're required to transfer €600,- to our university. This payment can go together with your proof of solvency (see below).

To know more about the Visa procedure please visit our: Visa and Temporary Residence permit procedure.

Proof of Solvency

When you are accepted and you do not have the nationality of an European Union country, you must proof your solvency. To proof this, you must have an amount of € 850,- per month for the time that you are staying at our university. You therefore need to transfer this total amount to our university once you received a letter of acceptance. Make sure to always transfer more than the actual amount, so bank costs will be covered.  For a detailed description, please visit the Visa and Temporary Residence procedure.
