Retaking examinations

Limitation of the number of retakes

There is a limation to the number of examinations you are allowed to retake:

  • You are allowed to retake a maximum of 3 examinations of bachelor-1 courses per programme and per academic year;
  • You are allowed to retake a maximum of 3 examinations of bachelor-2 courses per programme and per academic year;

There is no limitation to the number of retakes for bachelor-3 and master-level courses.

However, registration in OSIRIS for more than 3 retakes of bachelor-1 courses and 3 examinations of bachelor-2 courses per programme is allowed. This enables students to include any examination results from block 5 in their eventual choice for the maximum 3 examinations that they actually retake.

You can deregister for the other examinations via OSIRIS Online, after you made your final decision for three retakes. If a student does not retake an examination for which he has registered, OSIRIS will display the result ‘NO’ (no show).

Do not retake more than three examinations, even if the period to deregister has already closed!

Verification of number of retakes

After the retake period it will be verified how many retakes students have actually taken. Students who per programme retook more than 3 examinations for bachelor-1 and/or bachelor-2 courses only achieve a valid result for the first 3 retakes of the bachelor-1 courses and for the first 3 bachelor-2 courses that they have taken in the retake period. The result of the fourth retake and further will be annulled. Nullification of grades will be done without taking obtained grades, consequences for the Binding Study Advice or the difference between 4 and 8 credit courses into account!

Only the retakes that you in fact attended will be taken into account, regardless the number of retakes you registered for. Each retake that you attended and where your participation has been registered for by an invigilator counts.

Please notice

  • The limitation of three retakes for bachelor-1 and bachelor-2 courses applies to all ESE students, therefore also to senior students who still have to retake first or second year courses.
  • Students who combine two ESE bachelor’s degree programmes have to take account of overlap between courses. In the retake period overlapping courses count for both programmes. Somebody attending two courses is therefore not by itself entitled to more than three retakes of bachelor-1 and/or bachelor-2 courses.
  • For tutorial tests or assignments (amongst which seminars) there is no re-examination in the same academic year.
  • No limitation of the number of retakes applies to bachelor-3 courses and master courses.
