Student workload standards
General
The student workload consists of the hours needed to follow classes, the preparation to classes, taking examinations, preparation for examinations, studying the compulsory literature, etc.
The act stipulates (Dutch Higher Education and Research Act, article 7.4) that the student workload of each programme and each exam subject is expressed in credits. 1 Credit stands for a student workload of 28 hours.
As of the start of the academic year 2003/2004 all programmes of the Erasmus School of Economics express the student workload in ECTS credits (ECTS = European Credit Transfer System), abbreviated cr.
Scope of Bachelor's and Master's programmes
The bachelor's programmes Economics and Business, Fiscal Economics, Economics and Informatics, and Econometrics and Operations Research have a scope of 3 x 60 cr = 180 cr or a student workload of 5040 hours.
The master's programmes Economics and Business, Accounting, Auditing and Control, Fiscal Economics, Economics and Informatics, and Econometrics and Management Science have a scope of 60 cr or a student workload of 1680 hours.
Normen
The student workload of a course or seminar is based on the following standards:
Lecture: 1 contact hour = student workload of 1 to 2 hours
Seminar (excluding papers): 1 contact hour = student workload of 3 to 4 hours
Tutorial (active preparation by the student required): 1 contact hour = student workload of 2 to 3 hours
Workbook, regular type page: 450-550 words: 6 pages = student workload of 1 hour
Workbook, with a lot of formulas and/or symbolic notations: 4.5 pages = student workload of 1 hour
Dutch/English literature, regular type page: 450-550 words: 6 pages = student workload of 1 hour
Literature, other foreign languages: 5 pages = student workload of 1 hour
Literature with a lot of formulas and/or symbolic notations: 4.5 pages = student workload of 1 hour
