ERIM Symposium on Scientific Integrity and Data Management Practices

Scientific Integrity and Data Management Practices Recent incidents of scientific misconduct, but also demands from bodies such as NWO regarding data access and the expected “revitalization” of codes of scientific conduct such as the ones of VSNU and ESF, have highlighted scientific integrity as an increasingly institutional responsibility. Therefore, and to support our members in further improving the quality of their research and publishing, ERIM is developing a number of initiatives. ERIM will focus these initiatives on useful guidance and support for the long term academic career progress of its members. In particular, ERIM would like to encourage reflection on and synthesis of best practices regarding data management. Data management covers the entire process of collecting, processing, analyzing, archiving, re-using (and providing access to) research data.

At the moment, several working groups are working to identify a set of minimum and best practices with respect to these different phases of data management, each dealing with a specific research strategy (surveys, (laboratory) experiments, existing (public or collectible) data, case studies and quantitative modeling).

At the symposium on Monday 21 May, 2012 these working groups will each host a workshop discussing their preliminary recommendations. In addition, we have invited as one of the plenary speakers prof.dr.mr. Kees Schuyt. Professor Schuyt is currently the chair of a committee of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, investigating data management practices. The committee is investigating how researchers can be induced to treat research data with integrity, and how researchers – and their employers – can ensure that norms relating to scientific integrity are adhered to.
