On Thursday 14 June 2012 Bart Voogt will defend his PhD thesis entitled 'Essays on Consumer Search and Dynamic Committees'. Supervisor is Professor Maarten Janssen.
Time and location
The PhD defence will take place in the Senate Hall of Erasmus University Rotterdam and will start at 15.30 hrs.
About the PhD thesis
In his dissertation Bart Voogt covers two different topics: consumer search and committee decision-making. He investigates the price setting of firms in markets where consumers encounter costs (such as search and switching costs) to extract price information. One of his results shows that these search costs may lead to divergence of market shares and reduced competition. Another finding reveals that search costs may be more detrimental to competition than switching costs, suggesting that policy makers should focus on reducing search costs rather than switching costs.
Voogt’s second topic focuses on committee decision-making involving multiple decisions. The main question is whether a single committee should make all decisions or whether it is better to have multiple committees. The study identifies advantages and disadvantages of both options and provides conditions under which a particular option is desirable.
