Rules of the game 2010
As every approach to setting up a Top list seems to be debatable (there is no such thing as a 'perfect list'), one should realize that along this way some - probably equally relevant - scientific output is not being measured. Therefore the Top-40 list should be understood as being indicative for ISI output only.
Dutch Economist Top 40
For the calculation of the score in the Dutch Economist Top 40 there has been made use of the Science Citation Index (SCI ) en de Social Science Citation Index (SSCI ) from the Thomson ISI Web of Science for the period 2004–2008. Only the following ISI publication types (2004-2008) are included: 'articles', 'comments' 'letters', 'notes' , 'reviews' (but not 'book reviews') and ‘proceedings papers’. All other ISI publication types, such as '(meeting) abstracts', 'corrections', 'biographical items', 'software reviews' and 'editorials' are NOT included.
The next formula has been used to calculate the score of the researcher:
Pi = W (authors) × W (impact)
Pi = the score of publication i
W (authors) = 2/(1 + number of authors)
W (impact) = the average impact factor for the journal for the period of 2004-2008
The five big Economics&Management Schools (EUR, RUG, UM, UvA en VU) will all send in 20 nominees. The smaller schools (RUN and WUR) will both send in five nominees. From the total of 110 nominees the Dutch Economist Top 40 will be created. For researchers to be nominated they have to have an appointment of at least 0,2 FTE with a Dutch University. Next to this a researcher should have at least one publication in 2004-2008 in a journal on the DEB (Decanen Economie en Bedrijfskunde) journal list to be nominated. This is because the researcher should have some link with the Economics and Management field.
Institution Top
Pi = W (impact) * fte
------------------
A(pi)
Pi = the score of publication i
W (impact) = the average impact factor for the journal for the period of 2004-2008
Fte = part time factor of the author (i.e. percentage of her or his time the author is affiliated with this department/institute (20%-100%))
A(pi) = #authors of publication
Adding up the scores of the five participants from a specific university/institute gives the score of the small universities/institutes. Adding up the scores of the best ten participants and dividing the total by two, gives the score of the large universities/institutes.
