About the PhD thesis

The health care sector is increasingly facing pressure to enhance efficiency and effectiveness as well as having to respond to increased market orientation, changed legislation and modern demand driven care. Crucial in taking up challenges in this process are the people (managers, professionals, specialists, nurses etc.) working in this sector.

In her dissertation entitled HRM, strategic climate and employee outcomes in hospitals: HRM care for cure? PhD candidate Monique Veld argues that HRM in hospitals can play a significant role in improving overall performance and thus may be the key of success in organisations as such. Veld explains that although the Dutch hospital sector has been recognising the importance of managing human resources more and more, the emphasis is still on finding solutions for operational issues. One approach for HR to accomplish the goal of boosting performance is to create more context sensitivity, relating to acquiring deeper insight into the development of internal and external organisation context and its consequential challenges.

Apart from getting hold of a good fit between context and managing a hospital’s personnel, performance can be strengthened by aligning HR policies to strategic organisational goals. Veld says: “The first step towards satisfying objectives is to create awareness by implementing HR policies in a consistent way. This will not only enhance the feeling of a strategic climate, but will also result in more involved and dedicated employees”.
