Admission requirements for PhD candidates

(based on requirements of the graduate schools of ERIM and Tinbergen Institute) 

• Expected PhD candidates must have at least a MSc, MA or MPhil degree, preferably in Economics, Econometrics, Mathematics or Physics. The Master’s programme should have been completed before the start of the PhD programme.
• The candidates are expected to have excellent results in their first degree/graduate study.
• The PhD candidates needs to have explicit interest and motivation for scientific research
• Either a GMAT-test (Graduate Management Admission Test) or GRE-test (Graduate Record Examinations) is required for all entering PhD students. The test results should not be older than five years and an indication of the required score is either 85% (ERIM) or 90% (TI).
• Furthermore, an excellent command of English is crucial. Those students whose native language is not English are therefore required to demonstrate English proficiency by scoring either at least 600 on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), 250 on the computer based TOEFL or 100 on the internet-based TOEFL. For IELTS there is a minimum score of 7.
• Chinese nationals are required to register with the Netherlands Education Support Office (NESO) in Beijing to obtain a NESO Certificate.
• In addition to these formal requirements, candidates for the PhD programme are selected on the basis of their CVs, academic references, and interview(s) with the potential supervisor(s)

Please note! Only the ordinary, personal and endowed Professors of our School, who are members of one of the respective Graduate Schools (ERIM / Tinbergen Institute), are authorized to apply for a PhD position.
