ESE PhD programmes

Within ESE PhD programmes, candidates conduct their own research, while the respective Graduate School (ERIM / Tinbergen Institute) provides a balanced mix of expert supervision, postgraduate training and the independence to pursue ideas within relevant economic research themes. Four kinds of PhD programmes can be distinguished at ESE.

ESE MPhil / PhD programme (Five-years)

  • Starts directly after Bachelor's degree
  • Two year Research Master's programme (MPhil)
  • For succesful students, a guaranteed position in the three-year ESE PhD programme.

The MPhil programme offers opportunities above all for highly talented students whoaim for a research post at an early stage, and who want to work in fundamental research immediately after obtaining the bachelor’s degree. During the first two years of the MPhil programme, the respective Graduate Schools (ERIM / Tinbergen) will provide sufficient training in the fundamental economic research which leads to a Master of Science (MSc) degree. After obtaining the acknowledged MSc degree, successful students are guaranteed for a position in the three-year ESE PhD programme which leads to a PhD degree.

ESE PhD programme (Four-years)

  • Starts after Master's degree
  • Four year programme at Tinbergen or ERIM

ESE's four-year PhD programme is introduced for students who (are about to) successfully complete(d) their master programme and aspire an academic career. During the entire programme, the four-year PhD candidates need to be affiliated with one of the respective Graduate Schools (ERIM / Tinbergen Institute), meaning that the admission procedures and course modules of ERIM and Tinbergen Institute are used as much as possible. More information: ESE PhD Programme Procedure

Externally Financed PhD programme

  • For anyone who has obtained a master's degree
  • Externally financed

The external financed programme is similar to the ESE's four-year PhD programme. It differs from the fact that this PhD project is externally funded. Students who (are about to) successfully complete(d) their master programme and aspire an academic career are selected for these projects. Similar to ESE's four-year PhD programme, these PhD candidates are preferable affiliated with one of our respective Graduate Schools (ERIM / Tinbergen Institute), meaning that the admission procedures and course modules of ERIM and the Tinbergen Institute are used as much as possible. More information: Procedure Externally financed PhD Programme

External PhD programme

  • For anyone who has obtained a master's degree
  • No training or employment at ESE

An external PhD student is someone who conducts scientific PhD research without having a training position and without being employed at ESE. Anyone who has obtained a master’s degree can decide to start with a PhD project, provided that there is a full or endowed professor willing to supervise the PhD research and to act as promotor. With regard to the quality of reseach and the admission to the thesis defence, the external PhD students must comply with the same rules and requirements as the regular PhD students. Each external PhD student will make individual agreements with his/her supervisor concerning the method of supervision, the tempo in which the research is to be conducted and the facilities offered by the School. More information: Regulations for external PhD programme.
