Procedure PhD placements

The Research Advisory Committee (in Dutch: VCW) advises the dean about the School’s academic policy. The members of the Research Advisory Committee meet at least twice a year to discuss the strategic research policy and to monitor its implementation. The meetings are not open to the public unless the Committee decides otherwise.  An important duty of the Research Advisory Committee is to allocate the PhD-placements of the ESE. The procedure with respect to these placements is described below.

External PhD Positions

Each PhD candidate (both internal and external) should meet the requirement that (s)he is able to successfully conduct independent scientific research and completa a thesis in a realistic chance of success. With respect to external PhD projects two kinds of procedures need to be considered. Moreover, these procedures are related to the fact that the dean has to sign the so called ‘Form 1’: ‘Notification of intention to pursue a doctorate’.

Admission for non-Dutch PhD-candidates

  1. The ordinary, personal and endowed Professors of our School, who are members of one of the respective Graduate Schools (ERIM / Tinbergen Institute), must send all required supporting documentation (non-Dutch diplomas) to the admission office.

  2. The admission office first reviews all submitted documentation (non-Dutch diplomas) and asks the ESE Examination Board for advice in this matter. In case the ESE Examination Board gives positive advice the procedure of the ESE Resarch Advosory Committy has to be followed in order to start with the PhD project.

Procedure External PhD positions for both Dutch PhD candidates and accepted non-Dutch PhD candidates (ESE Research Advisory Committee)
in order to validate the quality of the candidate and research project

  1. Only the ordinary, personal and endowed Professors of our School, who are members of one of the respective Graduate Schools (ERIM / Tinbergen Institute), are authorized to apply for a position concerning the external PhD positions. The Research Advisory Committee meets at least twice a year (March/October) to discuss these PhD positions.

  2. To apply for a position at the External PhD programme, the applicants (in Dutch: promotor) must submit the condensed application form (in Dutch: verkorte aanvraag formulier) by sending it to the Secretary of the Research Advisory Committee (together with the required supporting documentation, CV and grades list, in case a candidate is present), before the stated deadline on the website.
Nb. Not fully completed condensed application forms will not be reviewed by the Research Advisory Committee!

  3. The Research Advisory Committee advises the Dean on the submitted condensed application forms.

  4. The Dean will respond to the applicants within three weeks after the meeting with possible suggestions of improvement with respect to the external PhD-project. The applicant is asked to fill in Form 1: notification of intention to pursue a doctorate, which will be sent as attachment together with the response.
  5. The PhD-candidate is required to submit this Form 1 for admission to the Doctoral Board as soon as possible. The Dean has to sign this notification. He will only do so if there is a written and reasoned advice from the Research Advisory Committee or of the Director Graduate Studies of ERIM/ Tinbergen Institute (with respect to Mphil students), concerning the CV of the candidate, the proposal for the doctoral thesis and if deemed necessary  recommendations to correct ascertained deficiencies.
  6. After the Dean has signed form 1, the admission procedure is completed and the rector magnificus will be requested to give approval for conducting the doctoral research project.
