The City of Rotterdam

Rotterdam was founded in the mid 13th century after a dam was constructed in the River Rotte. Over the centuries Rotterdam steadily grew into a port of importance.
At the beginning of the Second World War, on 14 May 1940, almost the entire city was ruined by a German bombardment. This is why there aren’t many pre-war building saved in this part of Rotterdam. Now, many years later, a new, modern city has risen from the ashes. The avant-garde architecture is famous national and international.
