Josee van Eijndhoven joined the Dutch Research Institute for Transitions in March 2007. She holds the chair in Sustainability Management. She has a PhD in the Natural Sciences from Leiden University in the Netherlands. Her original education was in chemistry. She is a member of the Netherlands Academy for Technology and Innovation.
Starting in 1975 she worked for 25 years at Utrecht University in the area of Science and Society. Her earliest research projects at Utrecht University were directed at broadening the decision-making around science and technology, with a focus on biotechnology, energy and soil pollution.
In the period 1985-1991 she conducted projects on risk assessment and risk communication around the chemical industry, for the EU and several Dutch ministries.
From 1991-2001 she was the director of the Rathenau in The Hague. The Rathenau Institute is the Dutch National Institute for Technology Assessment. It supports societal debate and the formation of political judgment on science and technology, with an emphasis on the societal aspects. It is an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Areas covered during the period 1991-2001 included biotechnology and cloning, ICTs, medical technology and environmental issues, like water management and cleaner production.
During the same period she was the coordinator of the Dutch part of the research project ‘Learning to Manage Global Environmental Risks’ at Utrecht University. In this project 10 arena’s (mainly countries) were compared with respect to how they historically dealt with the global environmental risks ozone depletion, acidification and climate change. This project was coordinated by prof. William C. Clark at the John F. Kennedy School of Government (Harvard University).
From 2001-2006 she was the President of the Executive Board of Erasmus University Rotterdam.
Since 2007 she is Professor in Sustainable Management at the Dutch Research Institute for Transitions (DRIFT, Erasmus University Rotterdam).
