De documentaire: To Belong in Rotterdam/ Thuis in Rotterdam

How do young people perceive their place in the society? Do young people with another background feel welcome, do they feel at home?
Tariq Ramadan thinks we should give them the floor and listen to what they have to say.
Filmmaker Rosh Abdelfatah provided the stage and followed five young, special Rotterdammers who have an islamic background for a year. This resulted in personal and intimate portraits of their lives, their ideas and their dreams.
A red thread in the film is the meeting that Tariq Ramadan had with them, in which he probed them about their identity and their sense of belonging.

Course by Tariq Ramadan open to students from (Dutch) Universities
Module 2: Citizenship and Identity  (part of the Minor Europe and the Middle East)

The course aims at providing students with a deeper knowledge of the diverse definitions and norms regarding the status of ‘citizen’ in relation to the nation state in the Western countries. It also deals with the current debates on ‘identity’ in the light of the ‘multicultural’ and ‘pluralistic’ modern societies. The major concepts just indicated will be approached from a historical perspective, but they will also be put into a contemporary context. The highly normative debates on notions such as ‘loyalty’, ‘sense of belonging’ and ‘social cohesion’ as these are currently taking place in several European countries will also be analysed.
