Over/About Erik
Erik Snel (1957) studeerde sociologie aan de Universiteit Utrecht. In 1996 promoveerde hij in Utrecht op een een onderzoek over het gebruik van sociologische kennis en onderzoek in de praktijk van sociaal beleid (De vertaling van wetenschap. Nederlandse sociologie en praktijk. Utrecht: SWP). Verder deed hij in zijn “Utrechtse jaren” onderzoek over uiteenlopende onderwerpen zoals nieuwe sociale bewegingen, lokaal minderhedenbeleid en over armoede en armoedebeleid. Vanaf 1998 is Snel als universitair docent en onderzoeker verbonden aan de Afdeling Sociologue van de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam (EUR). Hier doet hij onderzoek rondom onderwerpen als armoede, migratievraagstukken (m.n. migratie vanuit Midden en Oost-Europa), stedelijke ontwikkelingen en stedelijk beleid. Verder is hij o.m. coördinator van het masterprogramma Grootstedelijke Vraagstukken en Beleid (GVB) van de Afdeling Sociologie. Van 2002 tot 2005 was hij bijzonder hoogleraar Intercultureel Bestuur aan de universiteit Twente. In de herfst van 2004 was hij visiting professor op de Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences (MSASS) van Case Western Reserve University te Cleveland, USA. Vanaf 2005 is tevens verbonden aan het University College Utrecht (UCU) waar hij de cursus “The Sociology of Contemporary Cities” geeft.

Erik Snel studied sociology at Utrecht University. In 1996, he defended his dissertation about the utilisation of sociological knowledge and research in social policy practices in the Netherlands (De vertaling van wetenschap. Nederlandse sociologie en praktijk. Utrecht: SWP [The Translation of Science. Dutch Sociology and Practice]. Besides that, he did research about issues like new social movements, local integration policies and poverty and anti poverty policies in these years. Since 1998, Snel works a Assistant Professor at the Department of Sociology from the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). His research here centers on issues like poverty, migration (at the moment specifically East-West migration in Europe after the EU-enlargement), urban developments and urban policies. Besides that, Snel among other things coordinates a master program about urban developments and urban policies at the EUR. From 2002 to 2005, he was professor with a chair on Intercultural Governance at the Twente University. In the fall of 2004, he was visiting professor at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences (MSASS) of the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, USA. Since 2005 he is also relates to University College Utrecht (UCU) where he teaches thes course “The Sociology of Contemporary Cities”.
