Overzicht

Prof. dr. Bram Steijn (1959) is professor of public administration at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He holds the chair on human resource management in the public sector. He is also director of education at the department of public administration.
After a long history at the department of sociology – where he started as student in 1977 and finished in 2001 as associate professor – he switched in 2001 to the department of public administration at the Erasmus University. He first became associate professor there, but was in 2005 appointed on a special chair HRM in the public sector. In late 2008 he was appointed as full professor in public administration with the chair on human resource management in the public sector.

He wrote his PhD in 1992 together with Marco de Witte (De Januskop van de industriële samenleving) and received his degree with honors. He is especially indebted to his promoter prof. dr. Jan Berting who gave the example to be an inspiring teacher and manager. Since then, he tries to follow that example.
He has published numerous articles and contributions to books, for instance in the International Review of Administrative Sciences, International Public Management Review, Review of Public Personnel Administration, Work, Employment and Society and New Technology, Work and Employment. He is a member of the editorial board of ‘Tijdschrift voor Arbeidsvraagstukken’ and the ‘Review of Public Personnel Administration’.
He is also Academic Director of the Master programme of Labour, Organisation and Management at Erasmus University and co-chair of the NIG study group on Professionals under pressure. He is also one of the scientific coordinators of a course in professional public management in the region of West-Brabant.
On a regular basis he functions as an consultant to Dutch central government, agencies, local and regional governments.
