Dr. Theo Veld (1950) is universitair docent Sociologie aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam. Hij is lid van het internationaal Netwerk of Excellence voor International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion (IMESCOE). Hij is betrokken bij opdrachtonderzoek via het RISBO en ISEO.


Zijn onderzoeksgebied betreft de allocatieprocessen binnen het onderwijs en in aansluiting daarop op de arbeidsmarkt welke leiden tot ongelijke kansen op banen voor jongeren in het algemeen en allochtone jongeren in het bijzonder. In dit onderzoeksgebied komen een aantal van zijn interesses en loopbaanstappen bij elkaar. Opgeleid is hij als onderwijssocioloog die een macrosociologische en historiserende benadering hanteert. Deze is herkenbaar in zijn proefschrift uit 1987 over het Ontstaan van verplicht volksonderwijs in Nederland in de periode 1860-1900.

Daarna is hij zich in zijn werk aan Erasmus Universiteit gaan specialiseren in vraagstukken betreffende de arbeidsmarkt voor schoolverlaters en de invloed van de verzorgingssstaat daarop. Via zijn werk voor het Instituut voor Sociologisch Economisch Onderzoek is daar een deskundigheid inzake de onderwijs- en arbeidsmarktpositie van de vier klassieke minderheidsgroepen bij gekomen.

Dr. Theo Veld (1950) is assistant professor in Sociology at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is member of the international Network of Excellence on International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion (IMESCOE). He has been involved in contract-research through RISBO and ISEO.

His research interest can be described as: the allocation processes in the educational system and linked to these in the labor market resulting in unequal chances of getting a job for youngsters in general and allochtone youngsters in particular. This research interest mirrors his career. Trained as a sociologist of education he adopted a macro sociological and historising approach in his dissertation of 1987 about The development of obligatory popular education in the Netherlands between 1860 and 1900. In his work at the Erasmus University he explored the influence of the labour market and institutions of the welfare state on his material subject of the differential chances of youth and youngsters. In his work at the Institute for Sociological Economic Research at the Erasmus University he studied the position of youth with an ethnic minority background in education and the labour market.
