Dr. Julian Reiss

Dr. Julian Reiss (1972) is associate professor in Philosophy of Economics at the Faculty of Philosophy of Erasmus University. Reiss studied Economics and Finance at the University of St Gallen, Switzerland. He obtained his Phd in philosophy in 2002 at the London School of Economics with a thesis supervised by Nancy Cartwright and Mary Morgan.

Before coming to Rotterdam, Julian Reiss worked as senior researcher at the Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science at the London School of Economics, as visiting scholar at the Philosophy Department at Columbia University New York and as Ramón y Cajal fellow at Complutense University Madrid. In the past years Reiss organized international several conferences (e.g. the International Network for Economic Methodology conference in Madrid in September 2008 and the Philosophy of Medicine Roundtable in October 2009 at Erasmus University). He is a member of the editorial board of several scientific journals, such as Philosophy of Science and the Journal of Economic Methodology.

Julian Reiss is member of the board of the Erasmus Institute for Philosophy and Economics (EIPE). Within this field, his research spans topics such as the measurement of economic quantities, economic experiments and mechanisms in economics. Outside, Reiss works on topics in the general philosophy of science including causation, thought experiments, counterfactuals and computer simulations as well as on topics in the philosophy of medicine.

Because of his high standing and excellent research, the Faculty of Philosophy of the Erasmus University awarded Reiss the International Research Prize 2009.
