Classification of the Reading Room Collections
Periodicals, reference books and recommended and set texts are located in the Reading Rooms. These publications cannot be borrowed, but may only be consulted in the library.
Psychology Reading Room
To the right of the entrance of the university library there is a separate reading area for psychology students. There you will find the texts, essential for the psychology curriculum, for the first two years in twenty copies. Arrangement is in accordance with the organizational set-up of the curriculum:
General | Labour and organizational psychology |
Social Sciences Reading Room
Other psychology books are situated in the Social Sciences Reading Room (Tinbergen room), on the first floor. In this reading area you will find a selection of the most important reference and basic materials for the social sciences and pychology in general (handbooks, encyclopedia’s, dictionaries etc.). These also cannot be borrowed, but can be consulted in the library.
The classification of the Reading Rooms (except the Periodicals Reading Room) is based on the Basic Classification (BC). An example from BC is given below.
- Class: 77 Psychology
- 77.00 psychology: general
- 77.01 history of psychology
- 77.03 psychology: teaching, profession, organizations
- 77.04 methods and techniques in psychology: general
- 77.05 pyschology: experiment
- 77.06 psychology: observation
- 77.07 psychology: psychometrics
- 77.31 theory of functions: cognition
- 77.53 developmental psychology
- etc.
Thus each four-digit number refers to a subject. All reading rooms are numerically arranged according to this system. Publications on the same subject are arranged alphabetically within that subject by the first 4 letters of the author or title.
Periodicals Reading Room
A | General |
Each main class is divided into sub-classes, for example, S 17 is psychology. But relevant psychology periodicals can also be found in other classes, like EB 12 (organizations, f.i. for periodicals in the field of organizational psychology).
The periodicals are arranged alphabetically by title within the sub-classes.
With the help of the UL catalogue and the signs in the Reading Rooms you can usually quickly find the publication you are looking for. If you can't, ask for help at the information desk.
