How to sEURch

1.    What is sEURch?

sEURch (Summon) is the UL search engine, developed by Serials Solutions. This quick and easy search engine integrates searching the substantial UL collection, by simultaneously searching many files with one query.

2.    What does sEURch integrate?

It is important to stress that, despite the fact that sEURch is constantly extending its index coverage; the UL collection - especially in the field of medicine and law - is not yet fully integrated. sEURch contains:

3.    When to use sEURch?

Do: fast orientation and discovery
. sEURch searches simultaneously in various UL-collections and databases; it’s options to refine your search results are simple and easy to use.

Don’t: when you are searching for very specific scholarly information
. Not all UL-databases are integrated in sEURch, so you could miss crucial information. Furthermore, some of our databases have advanced search options, which go beyond the capacity of sEURch.  

If you are searching for specific information we advise you to visit our resources by discipline or search the subject-related databases yourself.

4.    How to use sEURch?

1) Type your keywords in the search box

  • If you’re searching for a phrase or exact combination, put the keywords between quotation marks, i.e. “mobile phone”.
  • Use * to find all variations of a keyword. For example, use phone* to find phone, phones, phonetic, etcetera.
  • Expand your search results by combining your keywords with OR. For example: mobile OR telephone.
  • Refine your search results by combining your search results with AND.

2)    Too many hits? Refine your search results by making use of the Refine Your Search-options on the left side of your screen, such as Content Type, Subject Terms or Publication Date.

3)    Do your search results lack relevance? Make use of the Advanced Search option next to the search box. This allows you to combine different kinds of keywords such as title words, search terms or name author.

Keep in mind

Use Internet Explorer 7 (or higher), Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome (4.0 ev) or Safari (Apple) as your browser.

When searching on names, results include works written by as well as about those named.

  • Use Advanced Search – written/created by to trace works by authors;
  • Clicking on an author’s name in a result will give you a list of works by that author.

sEURch excludes newspaper results by default. By clicking the orange Search Library button, results will be broadened to include newspaper articles.
