Borrowing from the collection

Most books in the collection may be borrowed. They are not on open access and must be requested via the UL catalogue. Normally, they can be collected after about twenty minutes. You have six working days time to collect your requested book(s).

The following cannot be borrowed:

books in the reading rooms
books in faculty and other libraries
books published before 1850
special material

Borrowing allowance

The total number of books that you are allowed to have at any one time is ten. EUR staff can borrow twenty-five books at one time.

Books by postal service

Books can also be sent to you via the Dutch postal service or the internal post for €2.75. You must have an ILL account to do this. More information is available at the information desk.

Loan period

The normal lending period for a book is three weeks unless otherwise defined. If a book is not returned by the due date and the loan is not extended, a reminder will be sent to the borrower, followed by a second, third, and fourth reminder and finally a bill. The reminders are charged to the borrower at the following rates:

The interval between reminders is one week, calculated from the send date. Your library card will be blocked on the third recall or if you owe €5 or more to the library. If you do not meet your obligations, it is standard procedure to call in a debt-collecting agency (high service costs).

You, as borrower, are responsibile to return books on time or extend the loan period, when this is possible. If you lose a book, please don't hesitate to notify the circulation desk; the library will ask a reasonable amount for compensation.

For your information:

Where there is a difference of opinion between you and the library in matters regarding the return/late return/non-return of books, the circulation administration makes the final decision, unless you can show a receipt.

Reminders and notifications by e-mail

To receive reminders and notifications, you must have an e-mail account.
EUR students and staff will receive reminders and notifications in the e-mail account that is provided to them by the University.

Why we appeal to your responsibility:

The University Library's books should be accessible to as many members of the EUR community as possible. Those who keep overdue books hinder other colleagues and students. Bringing books back on time, and not waiting for reminders, is an issue of fair play. Working and studying at the EUR is teamwork, as is the use of library facilities.
