New online course: Research Impacts: sources and metrics

The online course Research Impacts: sources and metrics of the University Library introduces the three currently most used data sources to measure scholarly impact: Web of Knowledge, Scopus and Google Scholar (including Publish or Perish), and the metrics available in these sources, like the H-index and the SNIP.

Impact measurement is becoming more and more prominent in universities: impact indicators, like the journal impact factor (on the journal level) and the H-index for individual researchers, are used as tools in national research reviews, in the allocation of research funds , even in job applications. Whatever your personal opinion about the (mis)use of these measurements: research metrics are not going away, so it’s smart to know as a researcher how these work: how are specific indicators calculated, in which contexts can and can’t they be used, which ones can be compared and which definitely can’t, how can you can influence them yourself, what are possible pitfalls?

You can use this course Research impacts: sources and metrics in two ways. To help you get to know a particular database, the same topics are covered for each database: how to find articles on a certain topic, citing articles, articles of a particular author or relevant journals and what you can do to make sure other people can find you in the database. On the start page of the course also a cross section of the course is given:  this table allows you to link easily to a particular topic, like finding the H-index, making it easier to compare the databases.
