Collected works

You will find the collected works of a great number of philosophers, such as Plato, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein and Bolzano in the Tinbergenzaal in the University Library. Sometimes these collected works were translated from the language of the philosopher into Dutch or into English; sometimes they come with explanatory notes by the publisher. These collected works often appear as a series of volumes; one or more new volumes are published every year.

These books have as a shelf code 02.00, followed by the name of the philosopher; for example 02.00 _Nietzsche. Erasmus is the exception; his collected works can be found under 10.00 in the reading room.

Many of these collected works are available online or on a CD-ROM so that they can be consulted from home. These databases, such as Past Masters, Spinoza im Kontext and Wittgenstein's Nachlass, can be found in the list of databases. You can often find full-text articles in these databases.

A list of databases with collected works can be found here.

Tip: In order to consult the databases on a CD-ROM, you need to install Citrix software once. You’ll recognise these databases by the lemon next to the title in the list of databases.
