Ongoing projects

Building new perspectives

From 2017 to 2026, work is carried out within the third phase of the Campus under Development project (CIOIII). This phase is just as drastic as the previous phases: large-scale renovations, new construction and a renewal of the south side of the campus. Finally, demolition will take place to make the north side of campus greener.

Here you will find the original publication that was issued about CIO III, then planned for 2017-2020. In the meantime, CIO III has been extended to 2026.

Campus pond renovation

The big campus pond near the Erasmus Pavilion is in need of renovation. This offers an opportunity to make the pond greener as well. EUR asked an ecologist to advise on adjustments to the pond, to promote biodiversity on campus. Together with this ecologist and the Rotterdam municipality, EUR is making a plan to construct natural banks, instead of the steep concrete walls the pond has now. This will make it more attractive for plants and animals to live there.

Tinbergen Building

Due to the shift in planning, the large-scale renovation of the monumental Tinbergen Building has been postponed until 2023. The highest building of the university was built between 1963 and 1970 to a design by architect Cornelis Elffers. With the new design by architectural firm Cepezed from Delft, the building meets the technical and functional requirements of our time, and it responds to future changing use, taking into account the monumental qualities of the building. A spacious void and staircase will connect different entrance levels and create a spatial public heart with interesting views. The hall will have lively functions such as a coffee bar, information point, study areas and restaurant. Sustainability and a healthy indoor climate are two important spearheads in the renovation.

Sustainability performance

When the renovation of the Tinbergen Building starts, the guidelines will be followed that must lead to a sustainability label BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method). The ambition level is BREEAM-NL Excellent, the second highest level.
