MicroLabs specifically aimed at TA’s and tutors

Are you a teaching assistant or tutor? And is your work mainly focused on delivering engaging teaching sessions or tutorials? The following MicroLabs have been made especially for you!

In this MicroLab you will deliver and experience numerous teaching activities such as leading discussions, icebreakers, think-pair-share, etc., that will help you create more engaging discussions and interactive (online) tutorials.

Goals/competencies

After the completion of this MicroLab you will be able to:

  • Select and deliver the appropriate active teaching methods for your tutorial;
  • Reflect on your own strengths and improvements in delivering an activating teaching method in your own education.

Target group and required prior knowledge

This MicroLab is intended for TAs and Tutors that are interested to further develop their teaching skills.

Form and time investment   

This MicroLab has a blended character. You will start in the online Canvas environment containing materials describing various activating teaching methods. The preparatory assignment will consist of preparing a short teaching session using one of those methods (about 3 hours of total preparation time). During the physical workshop (3h) participants will practically apply preparatory assignment and practice how to deliver activating teaching situations.

Assessment and badge

The MicroLab will be completed with a Proof of Competence, which consists of:

  • Completing a preparatory assignment that will be applied during the workshop
  • Reflection on applying activating teaching methods in own education
  • Classroom observation (Optional)

When you've completed the Proof of Competence, you will get a CLI/Risbo certificate.

As a teacher, you are often put into situations where you stand in front of the classroom. Whether it is to explain a theory or guide an exercise, for the moment being you are the centre of the attention, and the way you present it matters. In this MicroLab you will engage in practical public speaking exercises focused on developing your body language and vocal presentation. Furthermore, you’ll practice delivering an educational speech using rhetorical tools.

Goals/competencies

After the completion of the MicroLab you will be able to:

  • Reflect on own use of non-verbal communication and come up with the improvements.
  • Apply basic rhetorical tools to an educational presentation. 

Target group and required prior knowledge

This MicroLab is intended for TAs and Tutors that are interested to further develop their teaching skills.

Form and time investment   

This MicroLab has a blended character. You will start in the online Canvas environment containing support materials. As a preparation for the workshop, you will be asked to create an educational and an introduction speech (about 3 hours of total preparation time). During the physical workshop (3h) you will participate in various improvisational public speaking exercises focused on using non-verbal communication. In the second part, you will deliver the prepared educational speech and receive feedback from the trainer and a group.

Assessment and badge

The MicroLab will be completed with a Proof of Competence, which consists of:

  • Completing a preparatory assignment that will be applied during the workshop
  • Reflection on applying Public Speaking in your own education
  • Classroom observation (optional)

When you’ve completed the Proof of Competence, you will get a CLI/Risbo certificate.

The ability to clearly explain complex concepts or ideas in a simple and clear way is essential for effective teaching. During your tutorials student might often ask you to explain something once more, or provide alternative examples. Furthermore, sometimes a part of the students does not get your explanation while others do. As a teacher, you want to be able to craft your explanation in a way that everyone in the class can follow. In this MicroLab you will practice delivering explanations of complex ideas/concepts on multiple levels of understanding. Additionally, you will learn basic learning theories to create an effective verbal and visual explanation.

Goals/competencies

After the completion of the MicroLab you will be able to:

  • Deliver multiple levels of explanation of the same concept. 
  • Create effective visual explanations (i.e. presentation slide design) 

Target group and required prior knowledge

This MicroLab is intended for TAs and Tutors that are interested to further develop their teaching skills.

Form and time investment   

This MicroLab has a blended character. You will start in the online Canvas environment containing support materials. As a preparation, you will be asked to create a short presentation explaining one concept for 3 different levels of an audience's understanding using presentation slides (about 3 hours of total preparation time). During the physical workshop (3h) you will go through a series of exercises applying principles of learning to craft a simple explanation. Secondly, you will deliver prepared explanations and receive feedback from the trainer and a group.

Assessment and badge

The MicroLab will be completed with a Proof of Competence, which consists of:

  • Completing a preparatory assignment that will be applied during the workshop
  • Short reflection including crafting explanation of one concept/theory from the past or future tutorials
  • Classroom observation (optional)

When you’ve completed the Proof of Competence, you will get a CLI/Risbo certificate.

Different student groups often bring various challenges for you as a teacher. You might need to ensure a productive learning atmosphere, balance having authority with being friendly, and deal with difficult or challenging students or situations. During this MicroLab you will role-play difficult situations that might occur in the classroom and practice different teaching styles/strategies on how to address them.

Goals/competencies

After the completion of the MicroLab you will be able to:

  • Manage difficult situations that might occur within a tutorial group 
  • Adjust own teaching style to different student groups 

Target group and required prior knowledge

This MicroLab is intended for TAs and Tutors that are interested to further develop their teaching skills.

Form and time investment   

This MicroLab has a blended character. You will start in the online Canvas environment containing support materials. As a preparation, you will be asked to think and prepare a case of a difficult situation you have experienced or expect to experience during the tutorials (about 3 hours of total preparation time). During the physical workshop (3h) you will roleplay prepared difficult cases with a training actor and together with the group discuss the feedback and application of group dynamics theories. 

Assessment and badge

The MicroLab will be completed with a Proof of Competence, which consists of:

  • Completing a preparatory assignment that will be applied during the workshop
  • Reflection report on the experiences during the role play
  • Classroom observation (optional)

When you’ve completed the Proof of Competence, you will get a CLI/Risbo certificate.

In this MicroLab you will learn more about how to provide concrete, effective and consistent written feedback on assignments.

Goals / competencies

After the completion of this MicroLab you will be able to:

  • prioritize and limit yourself to the essential aspects of giving feedback;
  • formulate constructive feedback and feedforward that students can learn from;
  • apply the preconditions for effective feedback.

Target group and required prior knowledge

This MicroLab is intended for TAs and Tutors that have completed basic didactic training and want to enhance their skills in giving written feedback to students. It is crucial that you can apply what you have learnt in practice and that you have some prior experience in giving written feedback.

Form and time investment

This MicroLab has a blended format and consists of preparation materials and assignments, followed by an online 3-hour workshop and a proof of competence. In the workshop you will also receive feedback upon your written feedback and assignments from the trainer and your peers.

Assessment and badge

The MicroLab will be completed with a Proof of Competence, which consists of:

  • An example of your written feedback on a students work
  • A filled out self-evaluation rubric
