We ask this question as this award is designed for students from ‘a non-Western background’

Currently the definition provided by ECHO cites their perspective as being:

Dutch students with a non-western background;
Students with a refugee background;
International students who identify as part of a marginalized community in their own context

Nonetheless ECHO is aware of the changing social context behind the term ‘non-western’ and the challenges involved in defining the target group(s). Even though this definition appears to be no longer tenable, as drivers for positive societal impact ECHO & EUR still encourage students to apply.
