CO2 Footprint

All activities of the university result in CO2 emissions. The biggest contributors to the total CO2 emission of Erasmus University Rotterdam are commuting travel to and from the campus, business air travel and heat consumption. Our aim is to reduce CO2 emissions considerably.

Dutch wind energy and Carbon Credits

Erasmus University Rotterdam has for example joined the Rotterdam Climate Initiative which aims for a 50% CO2 reduction in 2025 compared to 1990 – and strives to reduce the emissions per student as much as possible. In order to realise this reduction, besides the measures to reduce CO2 emissions, Erasmus University Rotterdam buys Guarantees of Origin of Dutch wind energy to compensate the emissions from electricity consumption. The EUR also buys Carbon Credits – credits that are generated by CO2 reduction projects – in order to compensate the emissions from heat consumption. Erasmus University Rotterdam also aims to reduce CO2 emissions caused by commuting travel.

CO2 footprints of precious years

Every year the university publishes a CO2 footprint. In 2016 the total CO2 emissions of the university are determined at 11,491 tons. This represents a footprint per student of 0.45 ton CO2. Compared to the CO2 footprint over 2015 the total emissions are decreased by approximately 3,180 tons and the footprint per student has decreased with 0.17 ton.
