Smoking area K.P. van der Mandele Square (C)
In accordance with government policy on this subject, Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) wishes to restrict smoking as much as possible, hence observes the Tobacco Act. There is a smoking ban in all university buildings, with the exception of the smoking zones (outdoors).
Erasmus University Rotterdam values a healthy working and learning environment. That is why the university will realize a completely smoke-free campus starting from August 2020. Smoking and passive smoking are the main sources of deterioration in the Netherlands. Research has shown that the earlier young people come into contact with smoking, the greater the chance that they will become addicted to it. Many young people start smoking when they start their studies.
The university already takes its responsibility and is realizing a smoke-free campus with a transition year from September 2019 to July 2020, where five smoking zones will be retained on the campus.
Outdoor smoking zones until July 2020
EUR has five permanent outdoor zones for smoking. Smokers can go to:
- Theil on K.P. van der Mandele Square (right-hand corner);
- Balcony of the Tinbergen Building (side of the Institutenlaan);

- Side of the Bayle Building;
- In the corner of the Buildings Q, N and E.
On the tops of many campus litter bins, you will find cigarette butt extinguishers.
The smoking zones are located outside and are accessible 24 hours a day.
