Science, education, government and interest groups have long ignored material handling, while storage and transhipment are extremely important functions in the logistics chain of companies. Thanks to the establishment of the Material Handling Forum (MHF) by the Logistica Foundation, the sector is increasingly on the map. And that's how it should be. After all, there are about 30,000 warehouses, transhipment centers, hubs and large terminals in the Netherlands. This makes material handling without a doubt an important sector, with countless innovations.
Innovation spearhead
As an independent knowledge and network platform, the MHF connects science with material-handling practice. Several times a year, the forum brings together industry, academics and logistics companies. Innovation is a spearhead that is linked to the Logistica Award. The MHF stimulates both innovative scientific research in the field of material handling and product and service innovations in the business community.
Attention to internal logistics
In logistics in the Netherlands, logistics is usually seen as external logistics, focused on transport with various modalities. The MHF explicitly calls attention to internal logistics. How? By sharing research between universities and companies, defining research projects, generating graduation assignments, PhD research and promoting innovation and collaboration projects.
Applying for grant projects together
The MHF also wants to be a platform for joint applications for grant projects at NWO and the EU. In short: the MHF puts internal logistics on the map with decision-makers. This effort is appreciated by the sector, as evidenced by the growing number of partners and members of the MHF.
