Aysil Emirmahmutoglu

On Thursday 6 February 2020, A. Emirmahmutoglu will defend her PhD dissertation, entitled: ‘Misperceptions of Uncertainty and Their Applications to Prevention’.

This thesis studies how people misperceive risk and uncertainty, and how this cognitive bias affects individuals' preventive actions. The majority of people are not as rational as they are assumed to be against a risk they face, however, their behavior is not random either. People have imperfect understanding of risks and likelihoods but those imperfections are systematic. The studies in this PhD dissertation help to understand those systematic misperceptions: what they are, what mechanisms generate them, how they affect behavior and what can be done to help people make better decisions.

The public defence will take place at the Senatehall, 1st floor of the Erasmus Building, Campus Woudestein. The ceremony will begin exactly at 11.30 hrs. In light of the solemn nature of the ceremony, we recommend that you do not take children under the age of 6 to the first part of the ceremony.
