Flaring conflicts, huge interests and shifting spheres of influence; the situation in the Middle East is constantly changing. Lecture by Carolien Roelants on the current state of affairs of this important, yet complex, region.

Can the withdrawal of American troops from Syria be explained as a victory for Assad? What are the consequences for, for example, the Kurds in the region? What are the political consequences for Saudi Arabia after the gruesome murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey? Will the ceasefire continue in one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world in Yemen? And what about Trump's peace plan for Israel and Palestine?

Middle East expert and journalist Carolien Roelants in a current affairs lecture on this challenging region.

For thirty years Carolien Roelants was Middle East editor for the Dutch quality newspaper NRC Handelsblad. Currently she writes a weekly column focusing on the Middle East for NRC Handelsblad and NRC Next.  Besides numerous articles she wrote several books on the region, for example, together with UvA lecturer Paul Aarts ‘Saudi Arabia – A Kingdom in Peril’. This April, her new book ‘Across the Middle East’ (Dutch: ‘Dwars door het Midden-Oosten’) will be released.
