Master Media & Business Alumnus

Why did you choose the Master Media and Business? Was it a conscious choice for a specific career path? What other factors contributed to your decision?

The Master Media and Business was a conscious choice for my career path. In my bachelor and first Master American Studies I specialized in media, communication and journalism. However, I wanted to deepen my knowledge on corporate communication and business. The programme that Media and Business offered connected perfectly to this goal. Also, I was certain that a degree in corporate communication and (new) media would be very useful in getting a job, as it adds to what corporations need and seek.

Do you have any tips or recommendations for current students?

Choose your thesis topic wisely. Your thesis can be your entry in the job market, the business card that you can present to a company. In my case, my thesis on crisis communication landed me an internship at a great company, and my first job at another one. If you can show that you have a deep knowledge on something that a company wants, your thesis is your way in.

How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?

After graduation I first applied for an internship at a crisis management firm, which I got immediately. After this internship, I applied for two jobs. I got the second job I applied for. My experience of the job-hunting process was good. It went smoothly and quick, and the job application process is very dependent on the company.

How did you find your first job?

I like the website indeed.nl and indeed.com, because in my experience, it has the most complete overview of vacancies. I looked at new entries every day with the help of key words. Also, this site allows you to get an email every time a new job opening becomes available with your chosen key words in it, which can be very helpful.

For which organization or company do you currently work, and what is your position in the company or organization?

I will start my new job in July 2015, and I will be the External Communications Specialist for a large multinational financial organization. I will work together with the Head of Communications of both the Netherlands and the Benelux. External communications entails communicating with stakeholders, engaging in media relations, PR, et cetera. I will also work on reputational issues and crisis communication.

Which components of your Master are useful in your current position or career trajectory?

I really liked the course that dealt with corporate reputation and crisis communication. This was my topic for my thesis, and this turned out to be most useful for both getting an internship and a job. I also think that the knowledge on the influence and impact of new media on business success (and failure) is essential.
